As a reporters of the ECGI, I assisted with Maria Bonnici online to the World Congress on Osteoporosis osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal disease 2022 presented by the International Osteoporosis foundation (IOF) and the European society for clinical and economic aspects of osteoporosis (ESCEO) that took place between the 24th and 26th of march.

On the congress there were 10 plenary lectures, 14 meet the expert sessions, 24 Non-sponsored symposia, 1 ESCEO/IOF symposia, 1 ESCEO/WHO symposia, 1 ESCEO-IOF-SICOT symposia,1 ESPRM-ESCEO symposia, 1 EuGMS-ESCEO IOF symposia , 1 ISGE-ESCEO IOF symposia, 1 SICOT-ESCEO IOF symposia, 1 OARSI-ESCEO symposia and where submitted 1024 Abstracts and 35 Oral communications.

Osteoporosis is a disease that is estimated to affect 500 million people worldwide. It makes the bones become porous, weak and fragile increasing the risk of fracture causing more than 8.9 million of fragility fractures per year; Fragility fractures are a cause of pain, loss of quality or life, long term disability, loss of independence, increasing dependence on caregivers and premature death. One fracture greatly increases the risk of further fractures, which can result in a cascade of new fractures so we must be able to prevent it and detect it in early stages as much as to know how to treat it, and monitor those who have had a first fracture.

During the conference there were really interesting lectures about: Fracture programs such as Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), artificial intelligence and how it has changed the diagnosis time and the future of it, the possibility of new treatments for osteoporosis in the next years, the importance of the assessment of fracture risk FRAX® and in the nearly future with the updated tool FRAX®2, osteoimmunology, how the use of anabolic agents is the initial treatment for patients at high risk of fracture flowed with maintenance with antiresorptive agent and the duration of this agents, how the current evidence supports the use of Vitamin D + Calcium on those elder patients with inadequate intake of those nutrients for prevent falls and fractures, the effect of fibroblast growth factor 23 on the bone and kidney, the correct treatment of phosphate homeostasis, the treatment of chronic kidney disease bone and mineral disorders, the links between sarcopenia and osteoarthritis, assessment of sarcopenia, health economic studies, management of different fractures and osteoarthritis, management of bone tumors, best fall prevention strategies to prevent fractures, assessment of frailty and how use it for help taking complex decisions between other interesting topics.

It was a very diverse conference with many different contents and with really interesting speakers. If you are interested in knowing more about the most relevant news on the musculoskeletal system of the elderly I recommend you to attend next year's conference that will take place at Barcelona may 4-7 at CCIB Congress center.
